Spike Bite was born out of love and necessity in 2011–2012 in San Diego, California. It all started when inventor Dwayne Dumas and his family adopted a Dachshund-Rat Terrier mix named Maggie. Maggie was their first small dog, and Dwayne’s mother, Mary, raised an important question:

“How are you going to protect Maggie from coyotes, hawks, and bigger dogs?”

Dwayne, half-joking but fully inspired, replied, “I’ll make her a vest with spikes and turn her into a porcupine!”

That lighthearted response sparked a serious idea—a mission to protect not just Maggie but pets everywhere. The first Spike Bite vest was handmade for Maggie, designed to offer comfort, protection, and reliability. Maggie became the inspiration and model for every vest, starring in countless photos and videos that showcased her natural charisma.

From Idea to Global Mission

For over a decade, Johnny personally crafted each vest by hand, shipping them around the world to places like Africa, Rome, the UK, Germany, Canada, and all 50 U.S. states. The Spike Bite vest has traveled farther than the inventor himself!

Though interest grew rapidly after early interviews on Fox 5 and online buzz, Spike Bite faced challenges. Competing companies tried to replicate the product, partnerships fell through, and even Shark Tank rejected the idea. But Johnny’s determination never wavered. Instead, he and his family focused on:

• Refining the Product
• Improving Manufacturing
• Developing Marketing and Business Strategies

Where We Are Today

Today, Spike Bite is stronger than ever. No longer handmade, the vest is now manufactured by a trusted partner, Bark, with the ability to produce up to 1 million units per month. While the process has evolved, our mission remains unchanged:

To provide the highest quality pet protection products that give comfort, reliability, and peace of mind.

From humble beginnings to a global mission, Spike Bite exists because of the love for one small dog and the desire to protect her at all costs. We are forever grateful to the community that believed in us and supported this journey.
